BUILDING A KITCHEN GARDEN WITH 
35 RAISED BEDS,

A POLYTUNNEL, ROOF TOP GARAGE GARDEN AND

3 LARGE GREENHOUSES TO GROW PRODUCE TO USE IN OUR SMALL PUB.
INSTALLING TIMER PLUGS TO SHUT DOWN ELECTRICAL ITEMS OVERNIGHT.
MAKING CHUTNEYS, GIN’S, VODKA’S, PICKLES, SPECIALS, SORBETS, ICE CREAM, SALAD DRESSINGS, FLAVOURED OILS & JAMS OUT OF THE PRODUCE

GROWN OR GIVEN TO US BY LOCALS IN RETURN FOR BEER!

ANY EXCESS HERBS OR VEG WILL BE DEHYDRATED DOWN TO USE LATER AS DRY GOODS.

THE CARROTS & PARSNIP TRIMMINGS ARE SOMETIMES TURNED IN TO DOG SNACKS FOR OUR GREAT FOUR LEGGED FRIENDS WHEN THEY VISIT WITH THEIR OWNERS
INSTALLING SOLAR PANELS TO USE RENEWABLE ENERGY

TO HEAT THE GREENHOUSES & POLYTUNNEL AT NIGHT.
ACQUIRED SPACE IN A LOCAL FIELD TO HOME OUR BEES

WHICH ARE ARRIVING IN THE SPRING.

WE WILL EVERY YEAR PLANT WILD FLOWERS IN THE VILLAGE TO HELP THE BEES.


USING THE RENEWABLE ENERGY TO POWER A KILN TO SLUMP OUR USED

WINE / SPIRIT BOTTLES TO USE AS  SERVING DISHES RIGHT HERE IN OUR PUB.

WE USE OUR COFFEE GROUNDS & EGG SHELLS FOR THE SOIL DOWN ON OUR KITCHEN GARDEN 

AND COMPOST OUR VEGETABLE PEELINGS DOWN THERE AS WELL.

WE'VE INSTALLED 3 WORMERIES TO USE SOME OF THE VEG TRIMMINGS, FOOD WASTE ETC..

WE LET THEM WORK THEIR MAGIC AND GET COMPOST & FERTILISER IN RETURN!

TOILET ROLL CARDBOARD INSIDES & KITCHEN CENTREFEED ROLL INSIDES

ARE USED TO START SEEDS IN FOR THEM TO GERMINATE

 

WE WILL CONTINUE TO LEARN NEW IDEAS FROM OTHERS AND IMPLEMENT

THEM THE BEST WE CAN TO CONTINUE ON OUR JOURNEY!

Our Story

Every Journey has a story, Back in 2018 We took over The George from Richard & Ann Symonds.

We knew the village very well after running Ye Olde Nags Head successfully for the owners.

With help starting and along the way it became apparent that a lot could be done at The George with the outside space available to the rear and the front.

Dreaded Covid hit and the plans had to be put on hold for a while.

After reopening the main thoughts were on rebuilding the reputation we had gained before with hopes that the plans we have now implemented could be made possible.

In 2022 the possibility of owning a home in Castleton were made Reality and we secured land at the side as well on the entrance to the village.

Raised Beds, Polytunnel, Roof top garden, Greenhouses, Bee hives

all went in to full swing with a little help along the way.

We soon had a Variety of produce growing to make the Chutney's, Jam's, Sauce's

Flavoured Gin's, Vodka's & Rum's that we currently sell.

Locals soon became aware of what was happening and offer their Gluts of

produce in exchange for our Goods or Beer!

​

Our Veg Supplier G.W Price of Eckington then also became aware and offered their unsaleable items to us to use and reduce wastage again.

After fitting solar Panels, we purchased a Kiln so now we can slump used Wine / Spirit bottles 

into unique serving dishes for the food, again cutting down on waste.

It has been a very fast disappearing year with plenty on the go to keep us busy.
